Institute Presentation

The 2nd Department of Neurology of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology is a research unit in which stroke research is one of the main topics. The first stroke unit in Poland was established here. Also the National Programme for Stroke Prevention and Treatment and later the neurological part of the National Programme for the Treatment and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases have been coordinated by Professor Anna Czlonkowska and her team. For many years the Department has been the leading unit for stroke research in Poland, which is also confirmed by many publications. In 2003 routine acute stroke treatment with thrombolysis has been initiated and later coordinated for SITS (Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Stroke) by the staff of the Department. From 2003 the Department in collaboration with the Department of Neuroendovascular Therapy has also initiated acute stroke treatment with endovascular procedures, also coil embolisations for aneurysms, AVM embolisations and carotid artery stenting.

The Department has ran also many courses for physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and neuropsychologists in the field of stroke management and rehabilitation.

Annually ca. 350-400 stroke patients are admitted to our Department of which 20-25% receive intravenous thrombolysis.
